The framework which we use is the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The activities we provide cover the six areas of learning:
Communication, language and literacy – improving children’s listening, speaking and writing skills.
Creative development – encouraging children to express their ideas and feelings through play, music drama and movement.
Knowledge and understanding of the world - raising a child’s awareness of the world around them and their place in it.
Problem solving, reasoning and numeracy - developing a child’s mathematical ideas to help them problem solve and make decisions.
Physical development – developing a child’s physical skills such as balance, co-ordination, manipulation and control.
Personal, social and emotional development - teaching children to be aware of themselves and others and to develop independence and resilience.
Staff observe the children and plan activities to aid their individual development in the six areas of learning. Each child is assigned a key worker. Although all the staff will work with the child the key worker takes a particular interest in their individual development.
The rooms are set out so that the children can choose where they want to play. As a general rule we have have a creative area set up so that children can paint ,draw, stick etc. with materials on open access. Our home corner encourages role play and often this is adapted to different sorts of role play such as a shop, vets etc. Water and sand areas are available with a changing selection of water and sand toys. We have climbing frames inside and out to encourage physical development. The reading area provides a quiet, comfortable area for individual or small group reading. Children also have access to a changing selection of construction activities such as Georello and lego, puzzles and games and a selection of small world toys.
The morning follows a basic structure. Children arrive at 9.15am and play freely until about 10am when we stop for snack. Parents should supply a piece of fruit or other healthy snack. At snack time we initiate conversations and encourage the children to contribute. We regularly talk about the days of the week, the month and seasons and talk about the weather.
After snack we often have a special activity for the children to do with us if they wish, such as a particular craft activity, cooking or gardening . Then we gather together in a circle and play a few games and sing songs rhymes. We then give the children specific tidying up jobs. Then we go outside where we have a variety of bats, balls, Frisbees etc. as well as slides, rockers and a playhouse. We also have a large range of cars, bikes, tractors and scooters. For the last quarter of an hour we reassemble indoors on the mat for a story and/ or singing, and we often look at a chattersack together or we look at a ‘talking box’ .
